I must say that at the beginning of the season I was skeptical, but the midseason finale convinced me that The Originals is actually a good show. However, the midseason premiere, while good, just didn’t quite feel like it continued down the path the previous episode left us on. Here’s why.
Rebekah and the Casket Girls
Rebekah was without a doubt THE highlight of this episode, which did seem to revolve around her. It started out with a lovely flashback. I will admit I was hoping to see Kol appear with that smirk of his saying “Yo ladies, I just saved you from your drunken suitors. Come hang with me.”, but we received a good alternative, which was a badass Rebekah in a hilarious wig. I didn’t quite catch what the whole “casket girl” thing was though? I saw the caskets on the carriage but where exactly did that play in to having a festival? If anyone knows I’m all ears. Anyway, Bex was the star of the show and it was a beautiful, beautiful thing. Especially her mission of female empowerment! And may I mention that bringing Thierry back was brilliant. I am all for some Thierry/Rebekah!
Davina and Josh
My new brotp. Yea so Davina’s a girl but still, Jovina is right up there with Steroline in this category. They just have such a great connection on that friendship level. Anyway, Davina is officially in my book an awesome character. She’s had it rough, but she’s willing to fight for what’s right, and I can’t help but root for her. You get ‘em girl! (Just don’t kill my Klausy). Josh brings some much welcomed comedic relief. He’s a cool dude, and his character is realistic. For a guy that literally just found himself in the middle of this mess, he’s dealing pretty darn well. Josh, will you be my new bff?
Klaus and MarcelKlaus did not get much screen time, or much of a storyline. He basically seemed to just show up, be a royal jerkface and that was it. Not that there wasn’t potential for him to have a huge breakthrough or a moment in the spotlight. First there was the time when Davina told him to “show his real face” and said that she knew who he really was. By all means Davina do share, anything on Klaus is welcome! Then the time when he made that comment about Elijah must have forgotten what it was like to be in love *cough*Klaroline*Kalijah*cough*Klaroline*cough*. Excuse me…oh, yes, that seemed to be hinting at something as well. And then when Rebekah came out holding Davina and they had that long staredown, that had potential for a good brother sister chat about not murdering folks. Anyways, Klaus was “eh”, but there was still not enough of him! Now, at first I though Marcel and all his charisma might get really old really fast. However, I absolutely adore his brotherly dynamic with Davina and his dysfunctional relationship in regards to his relationships with both Rebekah and Klaus. What I’m getting at is, I like Marcel, and I’m hoping we get to see more of him and Klaus working with/against eachother in this shaky alliance.
Hayley and Elijah
I’ll admit that I liked Hayley’s character when she was first introduced on TVD. But her and Klaus’ “moment” and everything that happened after that has made me dislike her. Now I’m not going to get into that, its another story for another post, but, seriously, Hayley really has not impressed me with her life choices. Not that I condone Klaus being a psycho mass murderer, but at least that’s part of who he is and learning why he’s like that is why he is such a great character, among other reasons. Hayley, on the other hand, I find for lack of a better term, monotonous. I’ve tried really hard to give her a chance and care about her storyline, but I just find it boring and dry. It’s hard to root for her, and a really don’t give a rats patooty. This episode was actually one of her best this season. It kind of took a backseat, which was okay, and she really didn’t do much… I’m also just gonna scratch the surface with her relationship with Elijah here too. Again, another story for another post. But, personally I cant stand it. For one, I just cant see what Hayley sees in Elijah. Don’t get me wrong, he’s one of my favorite characters, but all he really did was be nice to her. Is that really all it takes for that girl to start seriously flirting? Then there’s the fact that he’s her child’s uncle. Like, can we wait until a little while AFTER she has the baby at least. I find it a bit…gross that she’s flirting with him while she’s still carrying his brothers baby (a brother that she still sees all the time). Call me old fashioned but it just doesn’t sit well. Speaking of old fashioned, what does Elijah see in Hayley? Definitely not his type, seeing as his last romantic interests were a powerful witch and THE Katherine Pierce… Oh, and I’m all Team Bring Elijah’s Suit back. He did look great without it, but Elijah without a suit is like Barney Stinson without a suit.
One More Thing
I liked the end of this episode, and I have nothing against this witch Celeste or anything (I actually think this plot could get pretty juicy), but when I hear “something big is coming”, and someone is going to show back up and change everything, I can’t help but wish that someone was Kol! But again, another story for another post.
